Dear Colleagues!
The Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of Azerbaijan has been officially operating since September 29, 2017, according to the Certificate issued by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The main goal of the Society, which unites the leading specialists of the Republic, as a single institution, is to promote the world standards of the specialty in Azerbaijan, to share theoretical and practical knowledge, to organize meetings of doctors engaged in this field, to investigate and eliminate ways to solve the problems they face, to conduct research on the specialty to support and promote them internationally.
In order to realize the goal, continuous scientific conferences, seminars, educational meetings will be organized in the association.
The following are the topics and ways of work that the association will implement to realize the main cause:
Our goal.
We would like to develop by sharing our knowledge and philosophy of oral and maxillofacial surgery with world experts. Development is a difficult process, but we must go through it and never stop. We should be able to sacrifice our time in this process with desire and patience.
A brief history.
Although the surgical operations of this specialty have been known since ancient times, the history of the formation of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a profession begins at the end of the last century. In 1962, doctors interested in this field in different clinics of the world gathered in London and formed the International Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
In connection with the subsequent activity of this Society, oral and maxillofacial surgery as an independent specialty begins to be recognized in the world and is constantly developing.
For many years, Azerbaijani surgeons have mastered this specialty, relying on their inner needs and feelings, in the absence of necessary conditions and appropriate supplies, almost completely isolated from more advanced western medicine. Only the most hardworking of them, based on their selfless work, putting this art above all else, with their progressive views, carried this service on their shoulders and managed to bring it to this day. This mission, which was not easy, often faced the barbed wire fences of sometimes jealous colleagues and administrative bureaucracy. However, it is this self-sacrifice that they have that raises the face and jaw surgery of Azerbaijan to a certain level and allows them to provide high-level medical services to their people. Their work determined the boundaries of this young field and its place in the education system.
Currently, several medical institutions in the republic have specialized maxillofacial surgery departments, and oral surgery departments and rooms are operating in dental clinics. In 2008, maxillofacial surgery was recognized as an official independent specialty in the Republic of Azerbaijan (Order No. 119 dated 2008 of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan). In 2010, the rules for obtaining the title of "facial and maxillofacial surgeon" in the Republic of Azerbaijan were determined by the relevant decision of the Cabinet of Ministers (No. decision). According to these rules, graduates of the Faculty of Dentistry can become a maxillofacial surgeon after completing a 5-year residency training program.
Although the oral and maxillofacial surgeons working in separate clinics made their contribution to improve the service, their fragmented activities and the lack of a single organization to represent Azerbaijan at international events greatly limited the activities of our specialists.
In 2017, a group of advanced oral and maxillofacial surgeons put forward the initiative of creating a single institution in Azerbaijan, and for this purpose, the Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons was founded.
